Book Review: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

Title: The Light Between Oceans

Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Publication Date: July 31, 2012
ISBN: 9781451681734
Pages: 343
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.
Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

MY REVIEW
I absolutely loved this book. From beginning to end I couldn't put it down. It's one of those stories that you could definitely relate to if you were in the same situation. Not only did I enjoy the settings of this story, set back in 1926, and in Australia. A place I have on my bucket list to visit one day.

This is a story about a couple. A story about loss, gain, betrayal , forgiveness and most importantly, love. A couple who fall in love and try to start a family. Obstacles get in the way when Isabel has a few miscarriages and goes into a depression while they are on the isolated island. When a child enters their life out of nowhere it's like it's a miracle, for Isabel. Even though Tom wants to make his wife happy he can't help but feel lots of guilt over keeping a child that isn't theirs. When they get back to reality and off the island the guilt is getting bigger and bigger.

I honestly cried and smiled so much while reading this story. It's one that will stick for a while and something that's not easy to forget. I definitely recommend this story as I'm sure most of you will love it. It was told through different points of view, but in a very smooth way. Very easy to follow and to feel the emotions that these characters go through. It's understanding because if the situation was your own it leaves you thinking that you too would probably react  the same way with any of the characters. The plot, story line and characters in this story were so well developed and well written. Definitely a page turner that kept me reading through hours of the night.

Many thanks to Bella Forrest, author of ‘A Shade of Vampire,’ the first division of a vampire book series I had the opportunity to review.

ABC's Red Widow: Season One DVD Review

One woman’s dangerous journey into the world of organized crime as she stops at nothing to protect her family.

“Red Widow: The Complete First Season” two-disc DVD set brings fans closer to the mayhem as the search continues to uncover the truth about season one’s most explosive murder. The exciting release is packed with extras including never before-seen moments, exclusive content and more.

MY REVIEW
This was such a great show. Filled with tons of both drama and action, Red Widow is definitely a show worth watching. I got sent a copy of the first season on DVD and I was at first hesitant to watch it because as soon as my copy arrived I read that the show was being cancelled.

Are you kidding me?!

Not only was the story line great, but the characters and all the drama surrounding this show was amazing. I can admit that the pilot had a lot going on in it, but they had to start somewhere and squeeze a lot in to get the ball rolling. I thought the show got better by each episode. This was different then anything on television right now. Forced to pay the debt that your deceased husband was blamed for and work with the mob, something that they were trying to get out of, there's rarely anything like this on TV right now.

I heard so many great reviews from friends and then when I shared the news that this show had been cancelled they were shocked as well. Only eight episodes this first season still had more action and packed drama then a lot of other shows that are on the air. Even though the show isn't coming back for a second season, I still suggest watching it if you haven't yet. Feel free to check out the clip below from the first episode.

Red Widow is now available for purchase today!

@HubertsLemonade Review & Giveaway

There's nothing like sitting on the porch on a hot sunny day enjoying a delicious glass of lemonade. With the weather being up and down lately I was glad I got to try Hubert's Lemonade when I did. It was a few weeks ago and our weather was beautiful out. If you've never had an opportunity to try Hubert's Lemonade I highly suggest you try it.

Hubert’s Lemonade is made using the freshest and sweetest lemons from California. They've been serving delicious lemonade since 1935 and I can imagine only getting better with all the delicious, refreshing and unique flavors they have now.

Not only is there the original and regular lemonade flavors, but Hubert's Lemonade also offers the following flavors as well:

Honey
Mango
Original
Limeade
Cherry Limeade
Raspberry
Strawberry
Blackberry
Half and Half Peach
Half and Half Black Tea
Half and Half Raspberry
Half and Half Green Tea

I got to pick two flavors to try. Of course I had to try the original. I also got to try Raspberry Lemonade as well. Let me tell you, both drinks were full of flavor and so delicious. It quenched my thirst and the original reminded me of the lemonade that my grandmother use to make for us as kids. Got to love drinks that remind you of your childhood.

I''m a huge fan and now want to find and try the other flavors as well. I'll have to make a list of the ones I find and taste because the two I got to taste were absolutely delicious. I can only imagine how good the other flavors will taste. both the mango and honey flavors sound like something I'd love.

So which flavor would you like to try?

With its 101 stories from other parents and experts, this book will comfort, encourage, and uplift parents of children with autism and Asperger’s.If you are the parent of a child – from newborn to college age – with autism or Asperger’s, you will find support, advice, and insight in these 101 stories from other parents and experts. Stories cover everything from the serious side and the challenges, to the lighter side and the positives, of having a special child on the autism spectrum.
MY REVIEW
Another amazing book from Chicken Soup. As I've said on my other reviews for Chicken Soup, I'm a huge fan. This book brought tears to my eyes. I have two children. At times I think, "Wow this is tough." Boy did I have an eye opener for sure after reading these stories.

I was one of those people who would see a child with a special needs and I had sadness for both the child and the parent. I thought,  "This parent has a long road ahead of them," but in most cases they don’t want the sympathy. To this parent with a special needs child this is normal life. They do what they can and what is best at the moment. Living day to day and in one part of the book there was a mother who stated, "Don’t all children have "Special" needs? Some need a night light, some need speech therapy, some need encouragement some need a pat on the back, some need wheel chairs, some need help with homework. How true and right on the button was she. That really touched me in a big way.

This book made me also see a bit clearer on lots of different situations. To be honest I don’t have just one favorite story, I loved them all. This was very inspirational for me.

Tune Into Lalaloopsy Saturdays on @TreehouseTV

Have you guys heard? Lalaloopsy is finally on Treehouse and they're on Saturday mornings at 8am! I'm pretty excited because my daughter is a huge fan of theirs. She loves the dolls and how unique they look. She absolutely loves the characters and she got a chance to watch the show this week since we were out of town last Saturday for the long holiday. I made sure to record it on our DVR so she could watch it during the week. She's very excited to see it tomorrow morning.

What I love about the show is that it focuses on teaching young girls about friendship, diversity and teamwork. Something all girls and boys should learn about.

If you have a little girl make sure she tunes in tomorrow morning, it's always nice seeing the actual characters on screen and learning a bit more about their personality. My daughter absolutely loves the April Sunsplash doll she was sent and got to sit down with her doll and watch the show.

Check out one of their webisodes below and make sure to tune on every Saturday in Treehouse! Check your local cable company if you don't know what channel Treehouse comes on. Keeping The Kiddos Entertained with @Netflix #NetflixKids

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of NETFLIX.

One of the things I absolutely love about the warm weather is that the kids get to go outside and play with their friends around the neighborhood. After school they come in, eat a snack, work on their homework and then they are out the door until it's dinner time. So far Spring on our side of town has been up and down regarding the weather. For instance, this past weekend was perfect and then on Monday it rained.

On rainy days or weekend mornings before the kids go outside to play, I know exactly what they're going to want to watch, Netflix. Netflix has been growing and growing and now with their Just For Kids section I know that I can put on our Playstation 3 and leave the television or movie selection up to both my kids. Not only is it easy for kids to use, but it also has all of their favorite television shows and movies on there for them to watch. It's definitely been a life saver for me to keep the kids entertained on days when I'm trying to get the house cleaned or have work to do.

Now there are times when my kids argue over what to watch. This is pretty easy for me as I'll then tell them to take turns on watching a show or I'll put on a show they both love to watch, like, Jake and the Never Land Pirates. I can't tell you how many times my kids have watched, memorized and enjoyed that show.

Netflix is constantly adding new shows, movies and episodes of shows for my kids to watch. Netflix has recently added new content from Hasbro, Disney Jr. and Cartoon Network, which includes shows like, My Little Pony, Caillou, Johnny Test and so much more. The options of different shows to watch are endless. Right now my daughter is obsessed with H2O: Just Add Water and my son, Thomas the Train. And on Family movie night it's great that we can all sit together and watch a movie that either we've seen before and loved or something new.

Don't have Netflix yet? It's easy to just sign up and the first month is completely free. After you've experienced what Netflix is all about trust me, you're not going to want to cancel that membership. It's great for the entire family and it's just going to get better and better. Don't have a Smart TV, that's not a problem. You can stream Netflix off of your home computer, a gaming console, blu-ray player, tablet or smart phone. It's great that you can take it anywhere with you. This definitely helps when I'm at a doctor's or dentist appointment with the kids. Letting them watch a show that they love on my Iphone before seeing the doctor is always comforting and keeps them entertained.  We also took our laptop to my in law's annual Victorian Campout Weekend and let all the kids watch a movie outside. They loved it! Definitely will be borrowing their projector during this Summer so we can enjoy more movies outside with friends and family.

What are you watching on TV with your family? Netflix has family favorites from Disney, Disney Jr., Hasbro, Cartoon Network and Dreamworks that are available to stream anytime, anywhere.

And streaming is easier than you think! Download the free app on your iPad, click on the Netflix app on any gaming device, go to the website on your computer – and you’re in business. Check it out here!

MY REVIEW
This is such a fun and entertaining show. My daughter is three and she loved all the sing along songs. This show reminded me of so many other fun and creative shows out there. So if your child is a fan of The Wiggles, Four Square or Yo Gabba Gabba they will definitely love this show and all the characters.

My seven year old son watched a bit as well and he loved that the show had lots of adventure with a mix of crime fighting included as well. Definitely a win in their book. I would for sure let the kids watch more of their up and coming shows as they were funny and kept my kids entertained for a bit.

Share Your News Of Having A Baby with @TinyPrints {Giveaway, Twitter & Pinterest Party} #TinyPrintsBaby

Time sure does fly by. I can remember like it was yesterday when my kids were newborns. I never knew how much I could love such a little person. One of the first things I wanted to do was share the news to everyone I knew. So when we had our daughter, the hospital had a photographer who took pictures right away. They turned out so cute and adorable and we got them back to us the same day. I was happy I was able to leave to go home with not only my newborn baby, but also pictures that I could put up right a way and give out to friends and family that stopped by.

For my son it was a little bit different. I had to take him after we were leaving the hospital to get his pictures done and then I had to wait a couple of weeks. It was all the same for me. I was just excited that I was going home with another healthy baby and knew that in a couple of weeks I would be able to share with my friends famlily pictures and birth announcements of him.

Did you know that Tiny Prints not only do customized greeting cards, but they also offer birth announcements, baby shower invitations and so much more. If only I knew about them then. MY REVIEW
This has got to be one of the cutest shows ever! When this show premiered on Disney Junior I think I was more excited then my kiddos. Not only is this show filled with adorable characters, bright colors and catchy tunes, but it's also filled with teaching kids about sharing and helping out others. Which is very important and a show all kids will enjoy. My daughter is almost eight and she loves Doc McStuffins. Now that we have the DVD this has been her favorite show to watch before heading to bed.

My kids and I are huge fans of the Doc and I often catch myself singing, "Time for your checkup, Time for your checkup" when I'm the only one at home, lol. In fact I now have that song stuck in my head.

MY REVIEW
My kids absolutely love any and everything Disney. I remember when Mickey Mouse Clubhouse first came out on Disney Junior. My kiddos loved it from the start. This is definitely a show that keeps your little ones busy and entertained. One of the things that I love is the questions they ask their audience so that they can feel like they are helping and participating.

At almost eight years old my daughter still loves this show and Quest For Crystal Mickey was no different. This new adventure is very cute and reminds me of Indiana Jones but for kiddos. She still loves participating in the questions being asked and now that she's a bit older it takes her little to no time to figure out the answers. It's amazing seeing how fast our children are growing and that one of the shows that will be part of her childhood will be Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Definitely a great show for children. Not only does it help with their education, but it's also a show that has memorable characters, songs and daily adventures, who wouldn't want to help Mickey and the gang out?

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Quest for Crystal Mickey is now out on DVD for your little kiddos to enjoy!

@MTVTeenWolf Season 2 DVD Giveaway

Around this time last year we had the first season of Teen Wolf up for a giveaway. Just Us Girls has teamed up to bring you a great giveaway, today we want to offer season two for you! Not only is this show packed with lots of drama with a side of romance, but it also has a lot of handsome looking characters in here as well and has a great story line.

Teen Wolf  jumps full force into season two with even more suspenseful drama than season one. Scott McCall, a teenager with a wild secret, continues to find himself caught in a supernatural war between hunters and werewolves. Scott must keep his forbidden romance with Allison a secret while keeping his friends and family safe from new Alfa wolf Derek.

Teen Wolf is just one of many shows that feature werewolves on the small screen. Below we list some of our favorite on-screen wild things!

Daniel “Oz” Osbourne (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) – you can’t help but love Oz. He played guitar with Dingoes Ate My Baby, loved Willow unconditionally and is the king of geek chic.
Scott McCall (“Teen Wolf”) – our romantic lycanthrope is a fighter who will stop at nothing to protect his loved ones!

Tyler Lockwood (“The Vampire Dairies”) – a human-werewolf hybrid and a football player, Tyler was at first arrogant and mean-spirited until he realized who he really was inside. (My personal favorite!)
Derek Hale (“Teen Wolf”) – descending from a family of werewolves, this fiery fanged-one is dangerous and a little sexy.

Veruca (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) – while she may have only been a werewolf in one episode of “Buffy,” Veruca’s appearance and werewolf philosophy profoundly affects Oz, who promptly alters his relationship with Willow.

Who's your favorite onscreen Wolf?

Teen Wolf Season 2 is now out in stores on DVD and season three returns Monday, June 3 on MTV!

Function Meets Fabulous with @BlingGuard {Review}

I absolutely love jewelry. I'm one of those girls who loves wearing lots of bracelets, earrings and rings when I go out. So when I had the opportunity to try a few items from BlingGuard I was pretty excited to see how it would work. What a great unique idea it is! There are two types of BlingGuards, the BlingWraps and BlingDots. The BlingWraps help your rings stay in place and keep from slipping and the BlingDots help relieve pressure and weight from your earrings keeping them lifted up and positioned right on your ear lobe.

I love my costume jewelry and yes to be honest I’ve done the whole tape thing to hold my rings in place from time to time and by the end of my evening it turns into a big mess trying to take it off afterwards. My wedding rings for instance. In the Winter months will slide all over the place, spin and at times have fallen right off, which is pretty scary. With the BlingWrap, I tried it and loved it. My rings have been staying in place and also allows me to wear the rings that I couldn't wear before. You know, like the cute unique one of a kind rings you find at a swapmeet and it's too big, but you get it anyways, yeah, so now I can wear them.  The wrap definitely keeps them all in place and from slipping off or turning around which we all know is a pain in the butt.

As for the BlingDots I love how well it supports earrings. I can remember countless times where I've lost either one of the two of my earrings or end up taking them off during an evening out because I found the earring to be too heavy on my ear. I have this one favorite pair of earrings that I love and well don’t wear them much as they are heavy and fall out. While wearing the BlingDot I was very impressed that for one, they stayed on and two, wasn't so heavy on my ear. I also found them to be very comfortable, which was something I had concerns about before I tried both products. So if you're like me and you have trouble keeping your jewelry in place or find that some may be too big, I would definitely thing about trying both products from BlingGuard and see for yourself how well they work.
Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received the above mentioned products at no cost for the purpose of this review and book tour. No other compensation was received.

What Makes You Sweat? Lady Speedstick Review & Giveaway

I remember vividly the first time I had to put on deodorant. I remember the conversation that went on between my mom and me. How I didn't think it was weird but cool that I could start using deodorant and my sister couldn't. Oh the memories. I also remember what brand of deodorant I used, Lady Speedstick. It's funny because not only did I use this brand of deodorant through out elementary, junior high and high school, but so did a lot of my girlfriends. It was the deodorant to have.

Lady Speedstick was a brand that was not only affordable, but it seriously got the job done. It makes me wonder over the years why I stopped using it. It wasn't until I had the opportunity to review both their Lady Speedstick Power regular and gel deodorant that I was questioning why I stopped. I've been raving about it to my husband who then asked me why I don't buy it anymore. I didn't have an answer for him because I didn't know myself.

This is definitely going to change. I loved using both the regular and gel deodorants. Both smell incredible and are last long. Luckily I have these two deodorants that will last me a bit, but I sure know what I'm getting once I run out.

Now, I've used gel deodorants before, to me they're perfect to use when you're wearing a sleeveless top or dress. It leaves no marks so you don't have to worry about being embarrassed wondering if your deodorant is showing on your clothes. Don't you hate when that happens? I found it best to put the gel deodorant on after I had put on my dress or tops with no sleeves because normally I put deodorant on before I put my clothes on. This worked great for me. It also helps to know that a little goes a long way. You don't want to put too much on to where it's making you uncomfortable. Find what works for you.

Thirsty Thursday: Rickard's Shandy ( @RickardsBeer Review & Giveaway)

There's nothing like a nice glass of lemonade or a cold beer on a hot day, especially after doing yard work. With the warm weather we've been having the hubby, kids and I have been enjoying the outside weather like crazy and while doing so getting our backyard together so we can enjoy our Summer.

That's why this week's Thirsty Thursday drink is Rickard's Shandy. This delicious drink combines both beer with a hint of lemonade. PERFECT for our hot Summers we always have here in Canada. I was super excited to try it since it seems Shandy's are becoming the drink to have this Summer. I've seen a lot of DIY ones on Pinterest and you know I plan on trying this Summer.

I remember trying a different brand last Summer while visiting family in Ohio and thought it was good, but you could barely taste the lemonade. Now with Rickard's Shandy you can taste both beer and lemonade and I love that the beer doesn't power over the lemonade and vice verse. A great combination.

This is even a great drink to have to all you out there who don't like beer, I definitely recommend giving this a try, it's delightfully refreshing. With the long weekend coming up I'm definitely having the hubby pick up a pack of these so I can not only enjoy this smooth drink, but I'm going to be sharing it with family and friends, you should too!
Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received a 6 pack of Rickard's Shandy at no cost for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received. A big thank you to the PR company for providing the giveaway prize!

Title: Wonder Light: Unicorns of the Mist
By: R.R. Russell
Publisher: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Publication Date: Mmay 7, 2013
ISBN: 9781402279898
Pages: 248

Deep in the heart of a mist-shrouded island, an impossible secret is about to be discovered.
Twig is used to feeling unwanted. Sent to live on a pony ranch for "troubled" girls on a misty, haunted island, Twig is about to discover the impossible — someone who needs her.Jolted awake from a bad dream, Twig follows the desperate whinny of a terrified horse out to the stables. There in the straw is a bleating little scrap of moonbeam. A silver-white filly with cloven hooves and a tiny, spiraling horn.
A baby unicorn.
Now Twig knows what secret is hiding in the island's mist: the last free unicorn herd. And a mysterious boy named Ben who insists that this impossible creature is now Twig's to care for. That she needs Twig's love and protection. Because there's something out there in the deep, dense shadows that's hunting for them...

MY REVIEW
I was thrilled to be a part of the book tour for Wonder Light: Unicorns of the Mist. The first book in the Wonder Light series did not disappoint. This was a quick read and it was really good. It's recommended for kids nine and up, but my seven year old is reading this right now and she's loving every bit of it. I love that she has a passion for reading. I also love that we get to share our opinions and  have a great story to talk about with each other.

I love how the story explores unicorns which makes us readers see them in a whole new way, definitely a great read for a variety of different readers. Not only do we have a story that explores the world of unicorns/ponies, but we also have some drama going on too. Don't worry, this story was written very smooth and with ease so even though there's a few different plots going on, it's very easy to follow and to understand. The beginning shares Twigs past and how she got to the ranch in the first place.

I absolutely love the main character, Twig, her courage and will power to help save the unicorns along with the other girls and trying to keep the entire island safe just amazes me. She's exactly what a lead female character needs to be, loyal, brave and kind-hearted. I'm excited to see what book two has in store for us.

Do You Know The Difference Between Government and Private Auto Insurance?

I don't know about you, but there is a lot of information about insurance out there that could put a girl on overload. For instance, did you know there is a huge difference between Government and Private Auto Insurance?

I knew there was a difference and would prefer private over government, but I wasn't aware of all of the information out there letting me know exactly what the difference was. There's so much information out there and not just what you read, but when talking to friends and family as well. So much information from different people and perspectives can drive you crazy. Thankfully with the help of IBC I was able to better understand the difference and learn a bit more. IBC has been working to make insurance less confusing. Thank goodness! Their Time to Talk campaign is all about showing us Ontarians how insurance works and what it means.

Check out some of the myths related to government-run vs. private auto insurance systems below:

GOVERNMENT
Limited choice for customers - Government-run auto insurance provides a
“one-size-fits-all” solution for consumers (e.g., fixed deductibles, no multi-vehicle discounts).

Fewer benefits - While it is true that the government-run insurers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan have lower premiums in dollar terms, consumers in these systems have far fewer benefits. BC is a tort jurisdiction. On paper the benefits are quite rich, there is no cap. In Manitoba, for example, an accident victim who is catastrophically injured has no right to sue for economic losses – including future lost wages – that are over and above a predetermined amount. Drivers have had the choice to opt out of no fault and chose to be in a tort system since 2003, but very few drivers chose this option.

Huge start-up costs - Depending on where you are in Canada, the average cost to establish a government-run insurance company would be $300-$500 million.

PRIVATE
Competition works - Auto insurance is purchased competitively in almost every jurisdiction in North America.

Insurance rates reflect true cost -Premiums in a competitive environment reflect the real cost of insuring a driver. Auto insurance premiums are set based on a host of factors that affect the frequency and cost of claims.

Employment - Private auto insurance systems provide vital injections of
investments, jobs and taxes into regional economies. The private insurance industry in Canada employs almost 100,000 people, either directly or through its support of a broker workforce.

For more information about both insurance, please feel free to check out IBC online.

Book Review: Screwed by Laurie Plissner

Title: Scrweed
By: Laurie Plissner
Publisher: Merit Press
Publication Date: Mmay 18, 2013
ISBN: 9781440557101
Pages: 300

Flattered by the attentions of Nick, the cutest guy in school, seventeen-year-old Grace Warren, captain of the math team, lets down her guard and gets pregnant the night she loses her virginity. Hopeful that Nick will drop to one knee and propose when she breaks the baby news to him, Grace is heartbroken - Nick wants nothing to do with her. Her best friend, Jennifer, thinks she should get an abortion, but Grace is certain that her morally upright parents will insist that she keep the baby. After she comes clean to her super-religious, strait-laced parents, they surprise her by insisting that she terminate the pregnancy to avoid humiliating the family. But when she sees the fetus on the ultrasound, she decides she can't get rid of it. Deciding to save the tiny life growing inside of her, Grace must face the consequences of being that girl - the good girl who got knocked up.

MY REVIEW
This was such a good story. From beginning to end I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved how real this felt  The characters, the situation, everything felt real and made me feel like if I was in the same situation I could totally relate to this girl. I loved how real the main character, Grace, was throughout the book. To get pregnant while in high school is something that a handful of girls go through. And the fact that there is a story like this out there to let girls know that they are not alone, is definitely something that should be read by not just girls who get pregnant in high school, but by all teenage girls.  Although there may not be a millionaire neighbor willing to take you in and help you out, the point is that you are never alone. there is always someone out there that's willing to help.

The relationship between Grace and Charlie was just too cute. I love how throughout the story their relationship grows and we see that. It doesn't happen over night, but love does happen there. Like most YA love triangle book there is always a good and a bad guy. I think the only thing I didn't like about this story was Nick, but his character was kind of there for you to not like him. Definitely a page turner, you see how much Grace grows as well as the relationships around her. Definitely a book worth checking out.
