Easy Peasy Peach Pie

A couple of weeks ago on our way home from the states we stopped at one of our Farmer's Market and bought twenty dollars worth of fruit. Now, this is a ton of fruit, but nothing has been wasted. The family has been loving the delicious plums, peaches and nectarines and I have been loving the cherries. They're awesome for a midnight snack and to munch on throughout the day.

Monday was my daughter's seventh birthday, so I decided that I'd make a pie with some of the left over peaches we had and with it we'd have a scoop of vanilla ice cream with it for dessert. I have to tell you this recipe is so easy. This was my first time making a peach pie. I usually make peach cobbler, but there's not too much of a difference that I saw after I was finish making the pie and the family absolutely loved it, especially with that scoop of french vanilla to top it off. I thought it turned out delicious and I'm sure I'll be making this again, especially this Fall and Winter, but I'm still a bigger fan of peach cobbler.

Which do you prefer, peach pie or peach cobbler?

Thirsty Thursday: Watermelon Lemonade

I'm still in awe on how fast this Summer went by and that I now have a five and a seven year old. My son celebrated his fifth birthday July 19th and my daughter celebrated her seventh on August 27th. Both Summer babies and I love it. I love that each year they get to have the option to have their party either inside or out. We always opt with having it outside because it's usually nice and warm out and it's another reason to have the entire family over for a barbecue and boy do we love to barbecue.

Anywho, this week the weather has been all over the place. So yesterday while it was nice and hot out, I decided to make the kids and myself a little treat. Lucky for us the hubby brought home a nice yummy watermelon the night before which inspired this week's Thirsty Thursday, Watermelon Lemonade. We all absolutely loved it. I'll be making another batch for us and all the cousins tomorrow as we have an End of the Summer picnic at our local splash pad! Enjoy!

Watermelon Lemonade

Ingredients:
3 Cups of watermelon (cubed)
1 frozen can of lemonade
1 can of water
Lemon wedge for garnish (optional)

Directions:
Cut up three cups of seedless watermelon. Add to your blender. Add in the can of frozen concentrated lemonade. Fill up the now empty can with water and also pour into your blender. Blend up til smooth and then strain drink to get rid of the pulp of the watermelon. Pour in cup with ice, garnish with either a lemon wedge or small slice of watermelon, drink and enjoy!

Death and the Girl Next Door Book Review

By: Darynda Jones
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication Date: October 2, 2012
ISBN: 9780312625207
Pages: 320

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace.  Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home.  For Lorelei, life goes on.
High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be.  Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it,  standing outside her house in the dark, night after night.  Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school.  Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity.  What does Jared know about her parents?  Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei?  And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?

MY REVIEW
Absolutely loved this first installment of this series. I couldn't put this book down. From the characters, the detailed descriptions and how much the story line drew me in, it took me all of two days to finish this. You get into this story and you honestly don't want to put it down because you want to find out what's next, why is this happening, tell me some answers, lol. It gets to where you're literally staying up until  two in the morning just so you get to finally read the information about the characters background and what they're all about. I think that might have been the only thing I would have changed from this, to get all the information without having to wait a bit, but I guess it wouldn't be as intriguing if the story just came right out and told us exactly what was going on, this is what made me want more.

I'm anxiously waiting for part two to come out, but seeing how this was an ARC and this book wont be out for another month or so I'll probably be waiting a bit. This was my first time reading anything from Darynda Jones, I'll have to look up her other series because this lady definitely has talent! If you love YA books and are looking for something a bit different that doesn't include a werewolf and vampire you will not be disappointed in this story, I know I wasn't.

Who I Kissed Book Review

Title: Who I Kissed
By: Janet Gurtler
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication Date: September 15, 2012
ISBN: 9781402270543
Pages: 320

She never thought a kiss could kill…Samantha didn’t mean to hurt anyone. She was just trying to fit in...and she wanted to make Zee a little jealous after he completely ditched her for a prettier girl. So she kissed Alex. And then he died—right in her arms. Was she really the only person in the entire school who didn’t know about his peanut allergy? Or that eating a peanut butter sandwich and then kissing him would be deadly? Overnight Sam turns into the school pariah and a media sensation explodes. Consumed with guilt, abandoned by her friends, and in jeopardy of losing her swimming scholarship, she’ll have to find a way to forgive herself before anyone else will.

MY REVIEW
I got the opportunity to read “Who I Kissed”.   When I read the back Jacket of the book I was pretty doubtful that this would be a book that I would like.   After I started reading it…I was HOOKED.  This book made me laugh and cry.  The story was both heartbreaking and amazing.  The story really made me think as well as put myself in other character’s positions and not just in Sam’s.  The characters were well developed and made me both love them and even hate them at times.  This was a fantastic book, one I’ll remember for a very long time.  From now on there won’t be any judging books by their covers.

New Treats From #Kelloggs

I've mentioned before how my family and I love the products from Kelloggs, I'm sure most of you do. A couple of weeks ago I was sent another box of new goodies in which I was more than happy to try. I have to be honest, they didn't last long whatsoever. My kids, their friends, my husband and myself had a wonderful time testing out the latest from Kelloggs and I've already been back to the stores to actually purchased a few of them.

Inside our box of goodies was their new cereal, Krave, we received both the chocolate and double chocolate box. We also received two boxes of Special K Crisps, the chocolate and Cinnamon Brown Sugar flavors and lastly in the box was a box of Special K Low Fat Granola, which was the thing I was mostly excited to try.

I have to say we loved all five boxes of goodies and so did my little ones. My daughter loved the double chocolate Krave cereal and my son was a fan of both Special K Crisp flavors. I loved all, but still my favorite had to be the granola in which I didn't just eat with milk, but I also used to make fruit parfaits for the family, which I will be sharing with you all later this week.

One thing about Kelloggs is that they sure know how to create something so delicious and still keep it reasonably healthy too. Krave is made with 8 whole grain and has two grams of fiber per 3/4 of serving. The Special K Granola has seven grams per serving and is 50% less fat than the leading competitive serving. And lastly with their Special K Crisps they are only 100 calories per two serving with 25 grams, which is a perfect snack for those of us with a sweet tooth, but also want to keep eating healthy and/or trying to shed some pounds.

So have you tried any of these new products from Kelloggs yet?

Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I am a Kellogger and receive products to test out and share. No post was required.  No compensation was received.

Baked BBQ Chicken

With Summer almost over and with the unpredictable weather we've been having lately going outside to barbecue on the grill is becoming less likely. So I found a recipe as I was browsing around the net last week that I think might just be one of my family's favorites already.

This baked barbecue chicken recipe from Divas Can Cook is super easy and very delicious. My husband was shocked at how good it turned out. It literally taste like I had these bad boys on the grill, but nope, it was all done in my good old oven.

This is definitely a recipe that will be getting much use when we get our craving this Fall and Winter for some barbecue. Enjoy!

Baked BBQ Chicken
Source: Adapted from Divas Can Cook
Ingredients
Chicken of choice (I used drumsticks)
garlic pepper seasoning
1/2 cup ketchup
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup water (I don’t always add water but in the video I did, forgot to mention)
6 Tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoons butter, melted
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2-3 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce

Instructions
Preheat oven to 450.
Place chicken on a foil-lined baking sheet and season both sides generously with garlic pepper seasoning.
Mix all of the remaining ingredients in a bowl to create the bbq sauce.
Place the sauce in the microwave to melt the butter if needed.
Cover both sides of the chicken with bbq sauce.
Bake skin side up for 40-45 minutes, basting with the bbq sauce every 15 minutes.
Turn the oven to broil for the last two minutes of baking and broil for 1-2 minutes to crisp up the skin. Watch it carefully.
Remove from oven and let chicken rest for about 5-7 minutes before serving.

Stealing Parker Book Review

Title: Stealing Parker
By: Miranda Kenneally
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Publication Date: October 1, 2012
ISBN: 9781402271878
Pages: 245

Parker Shelton pretty much has the perfect life. She’s on her way to becoming valedictorian at Hundred Oaks High, she’s made the all-star softball team, and she has plenty of friends. Then her mother’s scandal rocks their small town and suddenly no one will talk to her.
Now Parker wants a new life.
So she quits softball. Drops twenty pounds. And she figures why kiss one guy when she can kiss three? Or four. Why limit herself to high school boys when the majorly cute new baseball coach seems especially flirty?
But how far is too far before she loses herself completely?

MY REVIEW
Stealing Parker was an inspiring book that touches on one of the most difficult times in life for every teenager, but especially with Parker’s unique set of circumstances.  Growing up in a small town, I can easily see how gossip, opinions and overpowering religious beliefs could create a lot of stress to a young girl whose mother has come out as a lesbian. I know how lucky I am to live in Canada where there is a great deal of tolerance and rights afforded to all the different family types but even here gossip and religious beliefs could cause a problem for families outside of society’s “normal”.   Parker initially doesn’t react well to the change in her social status and starts to make bad decisions.  Luckily she finds herself surrounded by caring people who help her see past herself and learn to accept the curves life throws at you.  I enjoyed this book, it was a good read.

@Zevia: All Natural Soda Review & Giveaway

I rarely buy soda pop in my household unless I'm having a family get together, a party or unless it's on sale at the store and I can stock up for future occasions. And we rarely give our kids pop, so when I got the opportunity to try some of Zevia's soda, I was excited. I loved that the soda contain all natural products and that each flavor was sugar free. I wanted to try this to see if I could taste or notice a difference from regular pop and I was also excited have my kids try it because they rarely drink it and my son doesn't really care for it.

Zevia has zero calories, contains purified water and is sweetened with Stevia. The stevia leaf contains a number of very similar compounds or steviol glycosides that are all sweet. The best tasting of this is rebaudioside A which is used in powder or liquid form to heighten sweetening intensity and improve taste, so this is what's replaced instead of adding sugar in the other soda pops.

They have a total of 15 different flavors and we were lucky to get to try most of them. We were sent three of the following flavors; Cola, Ginger Root Beer, Lemon Lime Twist, Black Cherry, Ginger Ale, Orange, Grape and Cream Soda. I have to say I was very impressed with Zevia.

I found that although the taste isn't like regular pop, the taste of each and every one of these was still very much enjoyable and something I would love to have again. I think my favorite flavor was the Black Cherry. We don't really have anything like that here in my local town. The Cream Soda would have to be my second choice, it was a delight. To my surprise my kids loved Zevia, even my son did and he rarely cares for it. They loved it even more when we tried the Ginger Rootbeer and made a Rootbeer Float with it. I think we all enjoyed that.

For this having zero calories, I can see grabbing this if they were here in my local grocery store, it's worth it and healthier compared to your regular sugary pop.

@tatatoos Temporary Tattoos Review

Ta-Ta-Toos are temporary tattoos for women's breasts. Now, I know what you're thinking, temporary tattoos for adults?!?! But seriously these things are tons of fun and not just in a sexual way, although this would be great for you and your spouse behind closed doors. You can wear these at a Halloween party, put them on at a bacherlorette party, girls night out on the town and so much more.

Yes they are temporary as far as the tattoos go, but the memories will last forever. This is stated on their website and I for one think it's 100% true.

I had the pleasure of reviewing a few different Ta Ta Toos, I got to review the Happy Anniversary, Missed You, 100% Natural and Kiss Me  and let me tell you they were so much fun. My husband went out of town a couple of weeks ago and when he came home I used the Missed You tattoo and he laughed. We had a great time that evening.

What I like most is that each package comes with not one, but two tattoos. Each extra tattoo is the Lucky You tattoo. I plan on sharing those ones with the rest of the bloggers here on Just Us Girls on our next girls night out/in.

Another great thing about these temporary tattoos is that they can last up to seven days, but if you don't want them on that long they can easily be removed. Mine came off easily with lukewarm water and a towel. They're also non-toxic and hypoallergenic, which is pretty awesome.

For something new and different that's fun, flirty and playful I'd say give these bad boys a try, I think the next one I want to get is their Biker Babe for when I go on a ride with my husband on his motorcycle!

DINOSAUR TRAIN: BIG, BIG, BIG DVD Review

Hop on the Dinosaur Train and join Buddy the T.Rex and his adoptive family of Pteranodons as they travel around and meet some of the biggest dinosaurs inDINOSAUR TRAIN: BIG, BIG, BIG.  Buddy and his Pteranodon siblings embark on new adventures traveling back to the Jurassic Period, riding on the newest Dinosaur Train car – the flatbed, and earning their Junior Conductor hats.  Buddy even gets to meet another adopted dinosaur!  From the world-renowned Jim Henson Company, PBS KIDS and Paramount Home Entertainment, the DINOSAUR TRAIN: BIG, BIG, BIG DVD includes eight exciting edu-tainment adventures that bring dinosaurs to life and makes science fun.  “Dinosaur Train” is an Emmy®-nominated and Parents’ Choice Silver Honor series.  “Dinosaur Train” consistently ranks in the top ten shows for kids ages 2 to 5.

MY REVIEW
We had the wonderful opportunity to review Dinosaur Train: Big, Big, Big and let me just say that my kids were already a fan of this show. We've watched this on PBS plenty of times in our house and if it involves dinosaurs and especially trains, my son is hooked. This latest DVD was no different. The kids were both excited to see that they had a new DVD to watch and with how unpredictable the weather has been lately I decided to set them both up in our living room with snacks and let them watch the entire thing. Let me just say that they didn't move at all and were glued to the show. I heard laughter from them and they even learned a few new things about dinosaurs. I got to sit down and enjoyed this for a few minutes as well and I loved that not only was this a show for kids 2-5, but that my 7 year old was glued to this as well.

DIY: Fruit Fly Repellent

One of the things that I love about Summer is the fresh fruit we get to enjoy. Whether it's watermelon, cherries, peaches or apples, cold and delicious fruit has a way of always being there during birthday parties, family barbecues and just on those hot Summer days when you need something good to snack on.

This Summer we've had tons of fruit around the house, the only downside to this is getting those pesky little fruit flies that appear out of nowhere and annoy the heck out of you. So back in the beginning of July I did a little search and found everything that I needed to get rid of those little buggers was already in my kitchen waiting to be used.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Dish washing Liquid.

Two ingredients that will get rid of those fruit flies by the next day. I used this and have only had to use it once more at the beginning of August and that was it. These buggers gravitate to this mixture like you wouldn't believe. So I hope this is useful for you all out there, it certainly was for me and will be when these buggers decide to come back.

DIY: Fruit Fly Repellent
Ingredients:
Apple Cider Vinegar
Dish washing liquid
plastic cup/jar (something you want to throw out afterwards)

Directions: Take a small glass and fill it 1/2″ with Apple Cider Vinegar and then add 2 drops of dish washing liquid to it. Mix well and set in an area out of reach of children. That's it, You'll find those flies drawn to the cup and gone within a day.

  • 8 tbsp (1 stick) butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Thirsty Thursday: Raspberry Mango Smoothie

I'm counting the days down until we actually get to Fall. Not only is it my favorite season, but the kids will be back in school, routines will go back to normal and I'll have a clean house for most of the day during the week, lol. I've also found so many nice warm drinks to try out and share with you all, so I'm super pumped!

In the meantime I've been meaning to share this weeks Thirsty Thursday drink with you all for a while. I made it a couple of weeks ago and almost forgot about it. Thank goodness I had to go through my camera to choose which pictures to have printed out otherwise I don't think I would have remembered to share this yummy drink. Raspberry Mango Smoothie. It's really delicious and makes these last days of Summer and our crazy weather enjoyable. This is an non alcoholic drink so it's good for you and the entire family. My kids absolutely loved it and I hope yours does too. Enjoy!

Raspberry Mango Smoothie
1 can of Mango concentrated
1 1/2 cup of frozen raspberries
1 can of water
1 cup of ice

Add your can of mango concentrated into your blender. Fill the can up with water and dump the water in the blender as well. Next add your ice and then frozen raspberries. If you don't have frozen and have fresh that's even better!

For a more thicker smoothie like beverage add a bit more ice. Whatever is to your liking. Blend til smooth, pour in a glass and enjoy!

Dessert Bites Candy Review

Allan Candy has a new product I think you all will love, Dessert Bites. Dessert Bites are soft and chewy candy combined with a rich coating that provides the perfect dessert experience in a bite size piece.

I couldn't agree more.

I had the opportunity to try all four flavors of these delicious and addictive treats last week and although I had already tried one of the four flavors before, I was very pleased and so were my kiddos with the other three flavors.

The four flavors of the Dessert Bites are Key Lime Pie, Strawberry Shortcake (the one I've had before), Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake and Apple Pie.

Even though I enjoyed all flavors, my favorite turned out to be the Apple Pie Dessert Bites. I ate the entire bag while watching a movie last week, lol. I was pretty shocked. I reached my hand back in the bag and then tipped the bag upside down to see if I had imagined the bag being empty. Whoops!

I loved that you get a chocolate and white chocolate coating over the bites. I preferred the white chocolate coating over the chocolate coating except while trying the Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake bites, the chocolate coating went perfect with the flavor of the candy. My husband who's favorite dessert is Key Lime Pie, loved the Dessert Bite, he thought they were a perfect snack and brought them to work.

These treats didn't last long in my house whatsoever, which is a good thing, but I did appreciate that the bags all were resealable so that they stayed fresh. I've already been asked by both kiddos when I'll be getting some more of these addictive bites, I guess I'll have to pop on over to my local store where I found them the first time and buy another bag!

Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received all four flavors of Dessert Bites at no cost for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received.

Glee Season 3 Blu-ray Review

Season Three of the electrifying, award-winning series finds the Gleeks headed for the Nationals – and graduation! As younger members join New Directions, others are about to begin exciting, if uncertain, lives outside it. Featuring some of television’s most enthralling song and dance numbers, including memorable hits from the legendary Michael Jackson, Glee continues to earn its place in the hearts of viewers around the world.
MY REVIEW
If you hadn't notice by now I'm a huge Glee fan. When given the opportunity to review season three I hopped to it. I had already watched it faithfully every week while season three was on air, but having the blu-ray with all the special features and behind the scenes was just the icing on the already delicious cake. So these last couple of days I have been re-watching season three to get a feel for season three before the show returns. Season three gave us tons of laughter, great music and tears as our favorite seniors at McKinley High go through there last year before leaving.

Some of my favorite episodes from season three were the tributes to the late Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. I also found myself a huge fan of Samcedes (Sam and Mercedes) and hope to see more of them together in season four. I am thrilled to know that even though the seniors have graduated high school doesn't mean we won't see any more of them when the show returns. All cast members have been asked back for season four and we will also be introduced to a couple of new characters that will be joining our favorite Glee Club, New Directions. If you're a huge Gleek like me you'll go and run to the store to purchase season three to add to your Glee collection!

As a little bonus, check out this video that takes you behind the scenes as the seniors of McKinley High say goodbye!

Lash Card Review & Giveaway

The Lash Card is a disposable mascara shield that helps prevent mascara clumping and smudging.

Like many girls, I happen to be a little on the obsessed side of things when it comes to mascara. I love wearing it, and lots of it! When I got the chance to review The Lash Card, I thought it was a little pointless at first, why couldn’t I just use a piece of cardstock or something? But let’s be serious, I’m not going to make my own…

When I got it, I noticed that there was already a curve cut-out on either side of the card, one was larger than the other. I found the different sizes of curves to be pretty convenient to fit on my eye to get close to my lashes, since I apply mascara on both my upper and lower lashes. The Lash Card works to keep your eyes free from mascara marks where you might have other make-up around your eye that you don’t want to ruin!

My lashes stay separated, even when applying multiple layers. The only thing I wish was different, is it’s made out of a heavy paper, and is meant to be disposable (they come in a package of ten, individually wrapped in plastic, meant for 1 or 2 uses.). I guess that’s great and all so you can just throw it out when you start to  feel it’s getting too yucky to put near your eye, but it’d be cool if they made one out of plastic to wash and reuse. Overall, I find this to be a pretty nifty product that should be in every girls makeup bag!

Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I received the Lash Card at no cost for the purpose of this review. No other compensation was received. A Big thanks to Lash Card for providing the giveaway prize!
