DIY: Kool-aid & Vaseline Lip Balm

I was looking around on pinterest (surprise, surprise, lol) and came across a simple way to make some lip balm. I had been pinning tons of recipes for lip balm so that I could make a few for my daughter and her friends and finally found one of the easiest ones to make.

So today I introduce to you the most easiest and funnest do it yourself project ever, kool-aid lip balm.  Two ingredients. Vaseline or petroleum jelly and a packet of kool-aid. That simple. Man do I love Pinterest.

The only thing that's hard about this was the clean up. I should have gone with my instincts and used disposable items, instead it took me a bit to clean up my measuring glass and spoon since I didn't want to put them in the dish washer. Anywho, let's get to the directions. I hope you all enjoy.

DIY: Kool-aid & Vaseline Lip Balm
Source: Adapted from Meet The Dubiens

Ingredients
1 Cup of Vaseline  (petroleum jelly)
1 pkg of kool-aid drink crystals
1-2 packets of sweetner (Optional)
Lip gloss containers

Directions:
1. Add 1 cup of vaseline in a microwave safe bowl
2. Heat the vaseline in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each heating. It took me about 3-4 minutes to melt my vaseline. Note that It will be liquid when it is fully melted and very hot! Make sure you wear gloves or oven mitts and make sure children are being supervised.
3. Once melted take out of microwave and stir in kool-aid drink crystals until desired colour is reached. ( I used the whole package and because kool-aid by itself is sour, I also poured in a packet of sweetner so that the lip balm wouldn't be so bitter, this is optional.) Stir until the crystals are completely dissolved.
4. If you see that your vaseline is starting to solidify you can heat again for another 30 seconds - skip this step if it is still liquidy
5. Pour into your lip gloss containers and leave to solidify - a couple hours
6. Repeat this whole process if making more flavours
7. Give to all your favourite people, but remember to save a few for yourself too!

NOTE: After melting my vaseline and before adding the kool-aid I waited a couple of minutes to let the vaseline cool down so that it wouldn't cook the crystals. Also, this recipe calls for A LOT of stirring until the crystals are fully melted otherwise your lip balm will be gritty.

Containers: I have a couple comments asking about containers, I got mine at the Dollar Store, they came in a pack of three and are a little bit bigger then the normal lip balm containers. You can also try looking at Michaels and your local craft store. I just ordered some on amazon, but found more HERE that are way cheaper!

  1. That is too cool! I taught a "Beauty from the Pantry" workshop for a Women's Weekend a few years ago. We made homemade lip balm as well! Instead of vaseline, we used shortening. This is great!

  10. Oh so awesome! Great for younger kids too. It's safe and they can have a little color plus it's inexpensive and a great project they can do themselves. Everything rolled into one! Kudos on this one :)

  14. So I tried this out today and could not get my kool aid to turn the vaseline a pretty pink. I used a strawberry packet and it turned it brown. I then tried a different batch with pink lemonade and it was the same vaseline color but tasted like the kool aid. I am not sure if I did something wrong or what. But overall it tastes fine. Not real gritty or anything.

    1. I guess it depends on who you are. I love this recipe mainly because it's a fun craft that I can do with my daughter and she can pass them out to her friends. I still buy lip balm and lip gloss from stores, but this is just another do it yourself craft you can do from home. I guess that's the use of making it. For fun. :)

  18. Could someone comment on what it's like when you put it on your lips, and then follow up with how it is on your lips an hour later? It's not the Vaseline I'm worried about as much as the Kool-Aid (+more sugar!). All I see is how fun and easy it is to make, which is great and all, but I don't see the point in attempting to make it for "fun" if it's not also going to be functional (or sticky/gummy when it's on your lips)!

    1. It actually works pretty good, for me anyways. Since the Kool-Aid dissolves it's not gritty or sticky when you put it on, it's sweet, like some lip balms are.

  19. I heard if you want to make the lip balm solidify faster you can put it in the frig. Hope this speeds the process up!

  20. I have a question, how many of the lip balms does this make? If i just want to make it for myself in a small container should I decrease the recipe?
    Thanks

  21. I rarely buy lip gloss/chapstick, I keep vaseline on my night stand and a tube of it in the car for dry lips (I tink it feels/works better and is Waaay cheaper than lip balm)... this sounds like a fun thing to try since I use it anyway.. and we just happened to buy some koolaid the other day (which is also rare for us--we, the hubs and I, prefer the sugar free water like crystal light-- which is more costly, but better for you... but the kids need a treat now and then) ;) thanks for a great idea to use the koolaid, and not have a cup of sugar ingested by my sugar fiend! :)

    1. Hi Randi,

So sorry for the late response. I'm not sure what could have happened. This recipe does call for a lot of stirring, which is tiring, but it is so worth it.

  23. Ok I am doing this as we speak... hope this helps anyone who is thinking of doing it. I have vaseline and kool aid and sweet & lo artificial sugar. At first I tried it with the cherry flavour, but put it in too quick as vaseline must have cooked the crystals, so I re-poured into a clean measuring cup without any of the crystals as they stayed on the bottom. Re heated a bit, then waited a couple minutes, then added one packet of the orange flavour, no sweetener though as I assume my sweetener did originally dissolve in the vaseline the first time. Well it seemed to have worked better, as the vaseline took on a cute coton candy pink color, but still gritty... so stired and stired and finally let it sit for a couple minutes in the measuring cup before pouring. This allowed the crystals to settle at the bottom of the cup, so I could pour and they stayed in the bottom and did not get into my lip gloss container. So overall, not a total loss or waste, but certainly not the result one would hope, of a lovely clear lip gloss.

  24. Just made this! Turned out very nice. It did take a while to melt the vaseline (could have been because I was using a plastic disposable container instead of a glass mixing bowl.) I also added two drops of pink food coloring to add a little more color (it was kinda beige.) Thanks for a great idea!

Oh, and I found cute containers in the art aisle at AC Moore. They are normally used to keep left over paint.

  35. Myself and my husband had been trying to get pregnant for 18 months before I was referred to Priest Babaka fertility solution. We had no definite diagnosis of what was wrong and had become very frustrated. In November 2017 I was given a thorough reproductive health work up, I found out I had low progesterone, thyroid issues and a stomach issue which was affecting my ability to get pregnant. This was a very thorough process involving dietary, hormonal and physical investigations and started the recommended treatments in Feb 16 2018 by Priest Babaka. I was pregnant by April 17. I had a baby boy in march 2019. I was carefully monitored and Priest Babaka was always available for me. I can recommend Priest Babaka more highly so much so we are hoping to start trying for a second baby under his guidance. email: babaka.wolf@gmail.com or Facebook at priest.babaka
